Urbanization has brought innovation, employment but also pollution, heat, land degradation and a human health crisis. The challenge is how to revitalize degraded urban areas, while prioritizing ecological, social, and economic sustainability. Tackling these challenges requires innovative and transdisciplinary approaches to land restoration that are not adequately covered in most urban planning /landscape architecture university courses.

To help bridge this gap,  we have launched (07/05) an open source global course, intended for universities and training institutions in the fields of urban planning / landscape architecture/ urban geography/ land administration and related courses worldwide. You will learn how you can access it, what this course is about and about related upcoming networking and training opportunities.

Trigger Change!  Innovations in Sustainable Urban Land Restoration was developed over 12 months in partnership with:

  • United Nations University, Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS)
  • TH Köln, University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Germany
  • Ain Shams University, Egypt (ASU)
  • Kenyatta University, Kenya (KU)
  • Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia (UGM)
  • University of Cuenca, Ecuador (UC)
  • Food and Agriculture Organization – Green Cities Initiative (FAO – GCI)

With inputs by:

  • Oxford University, United Kingdom
  • Rivers State University, Nigeria
  • International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA)
  • SALAR International, Sweden
  • Munich Climate Insurance Initiative

This transdisciplinary university Master’s course was designed for educators and practitioners committed to, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and interactive, transdisciplinary teaching for sustainable urban development.  It was developed by academics and professionals in urban planning and sustainability and peer reviewed by experts from universities worldwide.

What’s included in the course package:

  • 48 hours of lecture content with teaching notes – from an introduction to urban land restoration to urban systems thinking and innovation in sustainable urban land restoration
  • A 130-page course manual
  • 10 international case studies
