The Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada welcomed a delegation from Ibaraki University, Japan, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international academic collaboration in the fields of Earth Sciences and Geography, on Tuesday (27/01/26).
The visiting delegation consisted of Prof. Takeshi Hasegawa and Prof. Festus Tongwa Aka from the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, Ibaraki University, accompanied by Kazuki Ishii (Ph.D. candidate), Yuzuki Seki, and Mina Sakamoto (Ibaraki University staff).
The visit highlighted the strong ongoing collaboration between the two institutions, particularly through the student exchange programs, including Sakura Exchange Program 2025 (8 students) and Sakura Exchange Program 2026 (5 students). In addition, one master’s student is currently participating through the MEXT University-to-University (U-to-U) scheme.
Discussions also explored future collaboration opportunities, such as reciprocal exchange agreements with tuition waivers, joint supervision for Ph.D. students (ranging from one semester to one year in Indonesia), potential JSPS-funded Ph.D. and postdoctoral exchanges, and the development of a Double Degree Program.
