The requirements for researchers, lecturers and students to publish their scientific articles, but on the other hand the limited availability of publication media with international standard in Indonesia bring up the existence of journals and conferences that do not fulfill several criteria for publishing a journal or scientific proceedings.
Some cases have been experienced by students, due to limited knowledge, hence their scientific articles are published in journals which are referred to as abusive journals. To provide students with insight and understanding of how to identify journals or conferences that are not appropriate as publication targets, the Library of Faculty of Geography UGM organized Predatory Journals and Conferences Workshops, on October 29, 2018, at the KLMB room E503. The speaker of this event was Siti Nurleily Marliana, M.Sc., Ph.D. He is a member of the Acceleration Reputation of UGM Journal Team and Managing Editor of the ASEAN Journal of Science & Technology for Development.
The workshop attended by more than 50 Master and Doctoral students was opened by the Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Geography UGM, Dr. Andri Kurniawan, M.Sc. In his opening speech, he stated that currently publications are important both for lecturers and students. For Master and Doctoral students, publication is for graduation requirements. It is necessary to have accepted paper as the part of dissertation. Dr. Andri said that this workshop was very useful for students to attend in order to gain an understanding of the quality of journals that would be targeted for publication.
In her initial presentation, Ms. Nurleily explained that predatory journal emerged because there was an open access movement and the existence of “markets” that needed publication, while internet technology, provided an opportunity for anyone to publish a journal. This needs to be a concern for academics to be able to identify predatory journals. Why do we need to identify predatory journals, Ms. Nerlelily explained that to protect the research, reputation of our authors and funding. The details are conveyed by the speakers about aspects that must be considered in identifying predatory journals and conferences. The event was followed by discussion session, which was guided by Purwani Istiana, SIP., MA as the moderator.
